The Heart of the City: The Republic Square Yerevan

Center of a city is mostly the commercial, cultural and historical heart of a city.  You will be able to spent a quality time within the city center with some sight-seeing also. Both locals and outsiders roll up in huge numbers there. So here, in this article we are moving to explore the Republic Square Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. Republic square is that the central square in Yerevan. What are the peculiarities of the Republic Square? So let us discover it.

Republic Square is that the central town square in Yerevan, Armenia. Provincially it’s called as Hraparak. Republic square has two sections. One is an elliptical roundabout and another is a trapezoid shaped section within which there’s a pool with musical fountains. This is often called "Heart of the Yerevan city" and it’s a favorite destination in Yerevan for the visitors. Construction of Republic Square was designed by Alexander Tamanian in 1924 and construction started in 1926 and since then it went till 1950s to finish most of the buildings, only the ultimate structure National Gallery was completed in 1977.

Within the times of Soviet period the square was referred to as Lenin Square and also there was a statue of Lenin here but after the independence of Armenia the Lenin statue was removed and therefore the square was renamed as Republic Square. Today, The Republic square is widely referred to as most significant civic space in Yerevan. The Republic Square is situated within the center of the town, near Abovyan and Amiryan Street. You will be able to get there by bus, by a minibus otherwise you can use a metro and get down at the station “The Republic Square”.

So once you land at the Republic Square what’s the attraction for you? Well, this whole area of Republic Square is created by five famous buildings. The National Craft Gallery and History Museum of Armenia, which contains about 400,000 exhibits covering the entire history of the Armenian people from primitive society to contemporary world. The Seat of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, on the tower which the country’s main clock is set.

The Central post office of the Republic of Armenia, which offers telegraph, money exchange, postcards for purchase, sending and receiving packages. The “Marriott Armenia” hotel which warmly welcomes all the guests all over the world and in spite of its authentic architecture, provides the foremost advanced services. Organization and communication building has been home to Ministry of Transport and communication. So, these are the buildings to explore at Republic Square Yerevan.

Apart from these you will be able to see the famous singing fountains which were opened in 2007. Tourists throughout the world come here to admire the attractive, outlandish and delightful views of them.  The singing fountains work daily from late May to October, making exquisite music. The show starts at 9 pm and lasts until 11pm gluing people to its colorful performance. The program of the show includes the world’s classical masterpieces, national music, rock and pop motifs of the twentieth and twenty first centuries.

Another astonishing feature about them is that the fountains change the colors in keeping with the rhythm of the song or music played. The fountains are visited both during day time and therefore the dark because every time they provide a distinct show: pure white dream under the daylight and colored fairy-tale as an assistance for the moon and also the stars within the darkness of the night.
