Short Summary

Who we are?
Kochar Cultural Foundation aims to promote Armenian culture around the world. Since 2003 we have been creating documentaries and feature films,  successfuly organizing art exhibitions, screenings, theatrical performances,  and other cultural and educational events.

Why TSOVINAR and what is it?
This year we are marking the 125th anniversary of Yervand Kochar and among other events dedicated to the great artist and sculptor, we have initiated to create a modern choreographic performance, based on Kochar's "Tsovinar" sculpture, which is very little known to public.

The performance will present Yervand Kochar's art with an innovative and alternative approach, in a plastic choreographic format, with three-dimensional projection solutions.
The colors and spatial forms of Kochar are dominant in the design of the performance.

Original music  is written by a young London-Armenian musician Adam Atamyan, the stage director and artistic director is Honored Artist of Armenia, director Ruben Kochar.

The contemporary dance performance features eight ballet dancers and ten extras.

What We Need & What You Get

"Kochar" Cultural Foundation has already made a large amount of work and investment: a libretto and original music has been written, the creative team and artists have been selected, and rehearsals for the performance are underway.

To bring this project to life and complete it on time, we need your support for the following works: stage costumes, decoration, recording of music by a small symphony orchestra, creation of three-dimensional animated video, technical costs.

We believe in the power of unity and are sure that even the very small donations can make a change. and make this project a reality.

The names of all the contributors will be mentioned on our Special Thanks list.

More about Yervand Kochar

Artist and sculptor Ervand Kochar's (1899-1979) creative heritage is one of the most interesting phenomena of the 20th century modern art.
Kochar in Paris, between 1923 and 1936 participated energetically in the creation of the historical Avant-garde art.  His creative heritage of the Paris period belongs to both  Armenian and European culture.
Kochar was singled out and appreciated among  the artists such as Picasso, Brack, Arp, Leger, Miro, Delaunay, Chirico and others.
In France Kochar founded a new plastic form of expression Painting in Space (Peinture dans L'Espace) which is one of the greatest achievements of Avant-garde in the opinion of the prominent art theorists.
In 1936 Kochar signed the Manifeste Dimensioniste which was the herald of the newest aesthetic principles of the time.  Just the list of endorsements on the document (Calder, Arp, Kandinsky, Delaunay, Duchamp, Moholy-Nagy, and others) reveals not only the whole spectrum of elite avant-garde but also Kochar’s role and place during this time and amongst the pioneers.
In 1936 he immigrated to Soviet Armenia and appeared on this side of the "Iron Curtain" where Stalin's terror raged. The road to return was closed forever ... Prison, persecution, and creative isolation followed.  However, despite everything, Kochar brought the spirit of modern thinking, new ideas, and innovative creative approaches into Armenian art.
